In the viewpoint of music, hauntology referes to the ideological idea that music can evoke "spectres" of the past, or in other terms, evoke nostalgia of the past. Hauntology and hauntology music are both relatively new with the original concept deriving from Jaques Derrida.

I am incredibly interested in hauntology currently and how the concept relates to other philosophical ideas. Hauntology appears to be a relatively simple concept but there are many layers of complexity and subjectivity with. I plan to research this topic over the next 2 and a half years for my Masters of Research and I'll be keeping you all updated along the way!

A quick question that I would like to leave to you;

  • If hauntolgocial music, in its simplistest terms, is music that creates nostalgia and "spectres" of the past, does this mean that the consumer of music can determain what is hauntological based on their own experiences and what they deem as nostalgic?
